At Aakar Charitable Trust, We build check dams in India to help transform the income and livelihoods of villagers
Demonstrating the effect of water on the environment and economic status of the people in whose area rain harvesting has been undertaken in a systematic way.
Aakar Charitable Trust constructs water-harvesting structures popularly known as check dams. We have helped build 216 Check Dams in Villages in Rajasthan and Gujarat since 2007.
These structures involve comparatively small masonry constructions with earthen bunds. They are most effective in hilly terrain where the whole hill range can be used catchment for the reservoir. They have all the advantages of the large dams and none of the disadvantages, such as displacement and rehabilitation of people, huge unutilized dead storage of water, water logging, risk of breach causing extensive damage to life and property etc. They are cost effective and bestow tremendous bounty upon the land and its people. We have also added income from cattle-rearing also, hence the figures show a remarkable jump from last year. The villagers joyously declared that now each house-hold has 8 to 10 cattle-head and income from Milk, Ghee and khoa is no less than Rs.15000/-per month. Increased income has provided 1 to 2 motor bikes per family and 4-5 tractors per village.
This level of self-sufficiency was unimaginable just a couple of years ago!
We believe that we do is nothing more than a tribute to the sublime amiability of water combined with the perseverance and hand work of the beneficiary society & the generosity of philanthropists.
A myriad of problems our country faces can be solved with ease and alacrity with an increase in rain-water harvesting initiatives that will allow our rural brethren live a much deserved life of dignity and prosperity. It goes without saying that the exodus from villages to urban areas is stemmed immediately when life-sustaining water is available for cultivating crops in villages.
